How Much Screen Time Is Right at Each Age (Without Pretending There's One Number)
Every parent wants one number: how much screen time is fine, for a kid this age, today. In 2026 the bodies whose job is handing you that number cannot agree on it, and one panel that set a limit says in writing its own limit isn’t based on evidence.
That isn’t you falling behind. The research itself is unsettled, in public, right now. Here’s where it stands, bracket by bracket.
The Guidance Fractured Instead of Converging
Two major bodies moved in opposite directions within months of each other. The American Academy of Pediatrics scrapped its media guidance on January 20, 2026 and dropped blanket hour limits, replacing them with five broader questions about the Child, the Content, staying Calm, what gets Crowded out, and Communication. Nine weeks later, in March, the UK published its first ever national cap: two to five year olds, one hour a day, in chunks of thirty minutes.
The Netherlands had gone further still back in June 2025, publishing a full per-age table: thirty minutes at two to four, rising to three hours by twelve and up. Its own authors then undercut it, noting the table shows what’s typical rather than what matters, which is what a kid does online and with whom. Sweden caps teens at up to three hours. The World Health Organization gives hard numbers under five, then flatly refuses any figure for ages five through seventeen.
Then the UK’s own expert panel, on the limit it had just set: “the following recommendations are not based directly on evidence,” and “none of the literature we identified provided convincing evidence for specific thresholds of screen time.” The number parents treat as settled science is, by its authors’ account, a careful guess.
What Actually Predicts Outcomes, Not the Clock
A few studies have raced total screen time against something more specific, and the hour count keeps losing. Followed over four years, roughly 4,300 US children showed no link between total screen time and any mental health or suicide related outcome, while a rising, addictive pattern of use predicted two to three times the risk. It’s observational, so it doesn’t prove causation, but it’s a signal the raw hour count misses.
Sleep tells a similar story. In one small but objective study, screens in the two hours before bed made almost no measured difference, while screens used physically in the bed did, gaming there costing about seventeen minutes per ten played. What it does suggest is that restriction relocates the hours rather than reducing them.
Ages 4 to 6: Ending Screen Time Is the Whole Problem
This is the age where turning a screen off, not on, is the harder skill. The ability to override an impulse is only about half developed at four, reaching roughly eighty percent by five, while working memory isn’t reliably ready for a complex rule until around six. Resisting a pull while remembering a rule asks a lot of a brain still building both.
Warning your kid before the screen ends doesn’t hold up in the one diary study that tested it. Kids were more upset when warned, though the authors admit the confound: parents warn more when they expect trouble. What helped was the device ending itself rather than a parent stepping in. Kids ended sessions unprompted a quarter of the time. Parents named autoplay, not content, as the real enemy. Ages 7 to 9: The Screen Time Bracket Nobody Has Studied
This is the honest gap. Nobody has studied how kids this age disengage from screens, or tested what helps. “Gaming is harder to stop than TV” gets repeated constantly and is, as far as the evidence goes, untested here.
What is solid: “cool” executive function, used on a calm task in a quiet room, approaches adult levels around twelve, while “hot” executive function, needed to stop something rewarding, keeps developing years longer. An eight year old who aces a rule switching test on paper still isn’t equipped to stop a game mid-reward-loop. One wrinkle, from a single Norwegian cohort: more ADHD symptoms at eight predicted more gaming two years later, the reverse of younger ages. An asymmetry, not a settled rule.
Ages 10 to 12: The Cliff, and the Group Chat
The device cliff lands earlier than most parents expect. UK smartphone ownership jumps from 56% at age ten to 83% at eleven, right at the move to secondary school, and German data shows the identical shape. Two countries agreeing on the same curve is rare in this research.
What arrives with the phone is a participation demand, not a passive feed. In the German data, group chats per child climb from one at six or seven to nearly four by twelve or thirteen, and nearly two thirds of kids have a whole class chat, a third of those saying not everyone is in it. Parents tighten exactly where things stop working, roughly doubling social media rules across this bracket, while television is the one rule that relaxes. Most families settle on something situational: no phone during homework, none in the bedroom overnight.
Ages 13 to 15: They Already Know, and They’re Already Trying
By now access is basically saturated, so the story stops being about who gets a device and becomes about intensity. Public facing social media has its real onset here, not earlier: Instagram use among German teens more than doubles across this window.
The best number here comes from device readouts rather than self-reports, since kids misjudge their own use badly in both directions: German teens average close to four hours of daily smartphone screen time, and even that likely undercounts. Researchers dropped their old self-reported “online time” question, calling it no longer meaningful. The Handover: When Rules Help, Then Stop, Then Backfire
One Dutch study followed 315 teenagers across four points from around age thirteen, and it maps this whole problem better than almost anything else in the research. Stricter internet rules predicted a lower chance of problematic social media use below roughly age twelve, no measurable difference between twelve and sixteen, and a higher chance of it starting above sixteen. Help, then nothing, then backfire. It is one study from the COVID years, so hold it as a shape rather than a law.
The same pattern shows up at national scale. South Korea’s overnight gaming curfew for under sixteens ran a decade before repeal in 2021, partly because minors used borrowed IDs to dodge it. Australia’s under sixteen social media ban has been law since late 2025, and early figures suggest most affected teens still had an account four months in, well before the fuller evaluation is due. A rule imposed entirely from outside gets worked around rather than internalized, which is exactly why confiscating the phone doesn’t build self control.
The Trajectory Ahead, and Why Adolescence Is a Peak, Not a Cliff Edge
Across countries using entirely different methods, the shape is the same: screen time roughly doubles from the start of primary school to the end of secondary. Japanese teens go from about three and a half hours of weekday internet use at ten to over seven hours by seventeen, and over a third of high schoolers now top seven hours a day.
The reassuring part comes from South Korea. Smartphone dependency risk, measured a completely different way, peaks at 43% for ages ten to nineteen, then drops through every older band. Adolescence isn’t a one-way ramp. It’s the peak, and most people settle from there on their own.
